Vandalur Zoo
|
The Vandalur Zoo, also known as the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, in Vandalur, is located about 30 kilometers from the city of Madras.
Founded in 1979, this zoo was preceded by the old Madras Zoo (founded 1855), which was one of the first in India, and the first to hold an All-India Zoo Superintendents Conference (1955, as part of the Centenary celebrations).
By 1975, the city had grown so much, and conditions at the old Madras Zoo were so bad, that a decision was taken to shift the zoo. The Government of Tamil Nadu and its Tamilnadu Forest Department came to the rescue. Thirty Kilometers from the city, 1300 acres (5.2 km²) were set aside for development of the zoo.
